Constructed Deckbuilding Validator, Legality Provenance, and Metagame Intelligence

Magic: The Gathering Constructed formats (Standard, Pioneer, Modern) demand extreme precision. A single illegal card, a fifth copy, or a card from an upcoming rotation set can invalidate weeks of testing.

Today, we are thrilled to announce a series of massive upgrades to takescake, transforming it from a Commander-first discovery engine into a robust, trust-first Constructed deckbuilding companion and card intelligence platform.

1. Constructed Deck Validator Dashboard

The Deck Studio at /deck now features a dedicated tab selector to toggle between Commander and Standard / Constructed formats. When in Standard, Pioneer, or Modern mode, you can paste raw decklists (directly exported from MTG Arena, Moxfield, or plain text) to run a comprehensive suite of mechanical checks:

  • Deck Count Verification: Enforces the 60-card minimum for main decks and the 15-card maximum for sideboards.
  • 4-Copy Limit Check: Checks that no card name exceeds 4 copies in the combined maindeck + sideboard. This engine automatically exempts basic lands and specialty cards like Rat Colony or Dragon's Approach.
  • Fall 2026 Rotation Warnings: Displays alert badges for cards from sets scheduled to rotate out of Standard in Fall 2026: Dominaria United (DMU), The Brothers' War (BRO), Phyrexia: All Will Be One (ONE), March of the Machine (MOM), and March of the Machine: The Aftermath (MAT).
  • Land Mana Sources Math: Scans your lands and displays a colored icon indicator of how many colored mana sources (β˜€οΈ, πŸ’§, πŸ’€, πŸ”₯, 🌳, πŸ’Ž) your land base contributes.
  • Matchup & Sideboard Planner: Tells you which cards in your sideboard target specific matchups (e.g. Graveyard Hate against Golgari recursion, Board Wipes against Boros Convoke/Mono-Red, Counterspells against Azorius Control). Supports a toggle between Best-of-One (BO1) and Best-of-Three (BO3) formats.
  • Add Missing to Collection: With a single click, parse your validated decklist and log all cards you do not currently own directly into your collection.

2. Advanced Syntax, Exact Oracle, and Rules Search

We have upgraded our search capabilities beyond pure semantic AI embedding matching. The search page at /search and the REST search API now feature a Search Mode Selector supporting:

  1. Semantic AI Mode: Meaning-based vector query matching for strategies, synergies, and natural language.
  2. Keyword Match: Standard keyword match with text stemming and fuzzy tolerance.
  3. Exact Oracle: Substring phrase queries matching exactly what is typed in double quotes (e.g., "draw your second card each turn").
  4. Rules Contains: Filters cards whose text box contains the query string directly.
  5. Advanced Syntax: Scryfall-equivalent syntax selectors allowing granular control, such as:
    • type:creature or t:instant
    • oracle:"draw two cards" or o:"exile target"
    • legal:standard or f:modern
    • color:wu or c:b
    • set:dsk or s:blb
    • cmc:2 or cmc:3

3. Legality Provenance & Data Integrity Box

To build absolute trust in our data correctness, every card page at /cards/{oracle_id} now displays a Data Provenance & Integrity scorecard. This box details:

  • Oracle Source: Scryfall / Wizards of the Coast
  • Oracle Sync Date: July 6, 2026
  • Legality Source & Checked Date: Scryfall, verified July 6, 2026
  • Price Sync Date: tcgcsv / TCGplayer price snapshot timestamp
  • System Identifiers: Mapped Scryfall ID, Oracle ID, and TCGplayer product ID for seamless cross-referencing.

Additionally, for Universes Beyond and complex releases (like Marvel Super Heroes), the page features a Legality Narrative Explanation explaining exactly why a print is standard-legal or not (e.g., "Standard legal because this card is from Marvel Super Heroes, released 2026-06-26, and the set is Standard legal" versus "Not Standard legal because this print is from Marvel Super Heroes Commander, which is a Commander-exclusive product").

4. Metagame Intelligence & Card Role Taxonomy

We have layered Standard constructed metagame stats and role classification onto card pages:

  • Standard Metagame Stats: Displays standard deck representation percentage, average copies run, sideboard share, top archetypes (e.g., Dimir Midrange, Boros Convoke), and recent tournament finishes (places, players, dates).
  • Card Role Taxonomy: Tags cards automatically with functional roles like:
    • Card draw / Card draw (Instant)
    • Second-draw payoff
    • Instant-speed enabler
    • Removal / Board wipe
    • Counterspell
    • Mana sink
    • Graveyard hate
    • Finisher
    • Tempo threat

5. Developer & Crawler-Friendly JSON APIs

For crawlers, search engines, and conversational AI agents compliant with NLWeb standard discovery, we have exposed four structured endpoints:

  1. Crawlable Card Data: GET /cards/{oracle}.json returns enriched card prints, prices, metagame contexts, and legality narratives.
  2. Card Search JSON: GET /search.json?q={query}&mode={mode} queries the card database and returns a clean list of matching card summaries.
  3. Decklist Validator API: POST /deck/validate.json validates MTG Arena/plain deck text and returns card-level errors, warnings, role distributions, and mana sources.
  4. Standard Legal cards list: GET /format/standard/legal-cards.json returns a compact directory of all Standard-legal card names and oracle IDs.

These routes are fully registered in the NLWeb Manifest (/.well-known/nlweb-manifest.json), OpenAPI Spec (/openapi.json), and AI discovery record (/ai.txt).
