Introducing Visual Synergy Explorer and Standalone Playtest Studio
Update (2026-07-19): Synergy Explorer IA was tightened into a single exploration jobācenter one card, read the case-file verdict, act on one buy/track CTA, with the shopping list as a secondary dock. See Synergy Explorer case-file UX.
Discovering new card synergies and verifying deck consistency are two of the most satisfying parts of brewing Magic: The Gathering decks. Today, we're thrilled to launch two major upgrades to the takescake experience:
- Live Visual Synergy Explorer: An interactive 2D force-directed node graph mapping semantically related cards in real time.
- Standalone Playtest Studio: A dedicated playtesting sandbox to draw sample hands, analyze mulligans, and run Monte Carlo simulations on any deck list.
1. Visual Synergy Explorer: Traverse the Multiverse by Meaning
Our new Synergy Explorer utilizes a hybrid Mechanical Synergy Engine combining Gemma AI embeddings with MTG card rules analysis to map cards based on strategy, mechanical synergy, and deck role.
The Upgraded Mechanical Engine
Instead of just embedding the card name (which previously led to poor matches), the backend now automatically classifies the card into Magic: The Gathering mechanical archetypes (e.g. Flicker/Blink, Sacrifice Outlets, Dies Triggers, +1/+1 Counters, Landfall, Spellslinger, Graveyard/Reanimate, Artifacts Matter, or Goblins/Elves/Zombies/Dragons tribal).
It then:
- Looks up the card's precomputed full-text embedding.
- Formulates archetype-specific synergy search queries (e.g. searching for creatures with ETB triggers when a flicker spell is matched).
- Blends the two similarity lists using a weighted hybrid score:
score = 0.4 * cardSimilarity + 0.6 * synergyQuerySimilarityto favor synergistic partners while keeping similar options. - Visualizes real mechanical connections between the outer cards dynamically using color identity, creature types, and keyword triggers in their oracle texts (rather than arbitrary circle ring lines).
- Prepends the target card at the center with a match score of 100 for visual consistency.
2. Playtest Studio: Goldfish Precons or Custom Brews Instantly
"Goldfishing" (drawing sample hands and playing out the first few turns) is the gold standard for testing a deck's mana base and early-game consistency.
While our Hand Simulator was previously buried inside the Deck Studio, we have launched a dedicated Playtest Studio.
Features
- Load Stock Precons: Select from our nightly catalog of official Commander preconstructed decks (including recent sets like Eldrazi Incursion and Quick Draw). We load and expand the card lists automatically.
- Paste Custom Brews: Copy and paste your deck lists directly from Moxfield, Archidekt, or plain text.
- Draw Hands & Mulligans: Draw sample opening hands and simulate Vancouver mulligan rules.
- Monte Carlo Simulations: Run 1,000 to 10,000 opening hand simulations instantly to calculate lands-in-hand ratios, ramp presence, card draw options, and keepable hand rates.
Technical Optimizations & SEO
To make sure these features are easily discoverable and performant:
- Sitemap Caching: We optimized our
sitemap.xmlgeneration with Next.js revalidation configs. This solves crawl time limits and page parsing timeouts, allowing Google to properly index our 16,000+ unique card pages. - Navigation Integration: We added direct header and footer links to both
/playtestand/synergiesfor seamless cross-site flows.
Go ahead and try them out! Center a visual web on your commander in the Synergy Explorer, or paste your list in the Playtest Studio to see if you have enough lands to curve out!
Happy brewing!
