Let’s crack open Erebor and see what treasure lies inside.

Smaug the Magnificent

Smaug the Magnificent

Smaug the Magnificent - {2}{R}{R} Legendary Creature — Dragon

Flying, haste Whenever Smaug attacks, he deals damage equal to the number of Treasures you control to any target. At the beginning of your upkeep, create a Treasure token.

Our Take: The Chiefest and Greatest of Calamities is here, and he means business. A 4-mana dragon with haste that generates his own hoard? Yes, please. Smaug turns all those Treasure tokens you’ve been hoarding with Dockside Extortionist or Magda, Brazen Outlaw into direct, repeatable burn. In a dedicated Treasure deck, this is an absolute bomb that can easily dome an opponent for 10+ damage on the turn he comes down.

Thorin, Mountain-king

Thorin, Mountain-king

Thorin, Mountain-king - {3}{R} Legendary Creature — Dwarf Noble

Trample When Thorin enters, attach any number of target Equipment you control to target creature you control. When one or more Equipment become attached to that creature this way, that creature deals damage equal to its power to up to one target creature.

Our Take: The King under the Mountain makes an incredible Voltron commander or a huge finisher in any Equipment shell. Entering the battlefield and instantly cheating the equip costs of everything you own—like Colossus Hammer or Kaldra Compleat—onto one creature is absurdly powerful. The fact that he also acts as removal by letting that suited-up creature punch an opposing threat is just the icing on the cake.

Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar's Plot

Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar's Plot

Bilbo, Luckwearer // Burglar's Plot Legendary Creature — Halfling Rogue // Sorcery — Adventure

Burglar's Plot - {4}{U}

Exchange control of two target nonland permanents that share a card type. (Then exile this card. You may cast the creature later from exile.)

Bilbo, Luckwearer - {1}{U}

Bilbo can't be blocked. Whenever Bilbo deals combat damage to a player, draw a card, then discard a card.

Our Take: Adventure cards are back! Bilbo’s adventure half, Burglar's Plot, lets you pull off a classic switcheroo—maybe trade a 1/1 Goblin token for their massive Commander? Then, for just {1}{U}, you get an unblockable looter that ensures you always find what you need. This kind of flexibility is a commander player's dream.

Bilbo, Thief in the Night

Bilbo, Thief in the Night

Bilbo, Thief in the Night - {1}{U} Legendary Creature — Halfling Rogue

Spells you cast from anywhere other than your hand cost {1} less to cast. Whenever Bilbo attacks, you may cast an artifact, instant, or sorcery spell from your graveyard. If an instant or sorcery spell cast this way would be put into your graveyard, exile it instead.

Our Take: This is a much more aggressive, graveyard-focused Bilbo. Cost reduction from exile, graveyard, or the command zone is fantastic. But getting to replay an artifact, instant, or sorcery every time he attacks? That's serious card advantage. Pair him with cheap interaction or value artifacts like Mishra's Bauble and watch the value roll in.

My Precious // Allure of Power

My Precious // Allure of Power

My Precious // Allure of Power Legendary Artifact — Equipment // Instant — Adventure

Allure of Power - {1}{B}

As an additional cost to cast this spell, sacrifice a creature. Draw two cards.

My Precious - {3}

Equipped creature has hexproof and can't be blocked. Equip—{2}, Pay 2 life.

Our Take: A thematic masterpiece. Allure of Power is a standard Village Rites variant (which is always playable), but attached to an incredibly potent equipment. Giving a creature hexproof and making it unblockable makes it an absolute nightmare to deal with. The life payment on equip perfectly captures the creeping corruption of the Ring.

The Arkenstone // Seek the Heart

The Arkenstone // Seek the Heart

The Arkenstone // Seek the Heart Legendary Artifact // Sorcery — Adventure

Seek the Heart - {2}{W}

Search your library for a legendary creature card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle. (Then exile this card. You may cast the artifact later from exile.)

The Arkenstone - {5}

Creatures you control get +1/+1. At the beginning of your end step, draw a card.

Our Take: The Heart of the Mountain! Seek the Heart is an excellent tutor for white decks relying on legendary creatures. Once you cast it, you can later drop the Arkenstone itself to anthem your board and secure steady card draw. While 5 mana is a bit steep for the artifact, having the tutor attached makes it highly playable.

Tom, Bert, and William

Tom, Bert, and William

Tom, Bert, and William - {3}{B}{G} Legendary Creature — Troll

{1}, Sacrifice another creature: Draw cards equal to the sacrificed creature's power, then discard a card. When Tom, Bert, and William die, if they were a creature, return them to the battlefield. They're an artifact. (They're no longer a creature.)

Our Take: This is one of the most mechanically flavorful cards in the set! When the sun comes up (they die), they turn to stone (become an artifact). Before they suffer that fate, they act as an incredible sacrifice outlet, letting you chew through your own creatures to dig deep into your deck. The Golgari player in your pod is already brewing with this.

An Unexpected Party // At the Door

An Unexpected Party // At the Door

An Unexpected Party // At the Door Enchantment // Sorcery — Adventure

At the Door - {X}{2}{W}

Create X 2/2 red Dwarf creature tokens. (Then exile this card. You may cast the enchantment later from exile.)

An Unexpected Party - {2}{W}{W}

As this enchantment enters, choose a creature type. Creatures you control of the chosen type get +2/+2.

Our Take: Build-your-own Dwarf tribal! Late game, At the Door can dump a massive army of 2/2 Dwarves onto the battlefield. Then, the enchantment half pumps them into 4/4s. Or you can just drop the enchantment early for any tribal deck looking for a solid anthem.

Riddles in the Dark

Riddles in the Dark

Riddles in the Dark - {2}{U} Instant

Look at the top four cards of your library and separate them into a face-down pile and a face-up pile. An opponent chooses one of the piles. Put that pile into your hand and the other into your graveyard.

Our Take: A beautifully balanced, mind-game card similar to Fact or Fiction or Atris, Oracle of Half-Truths. You force your opponent to guess which pile holds the card you actually want. Since it puts the unchosen pile into the graveyard, it plays perfectly with reanimator or graveyard-centric strategies.

Wood Elves

Wood Elves

Wood Elves - {2}{G} Creature — Elf Scout

When this creature enters, search your library for a Forest card, put that card onto the battlefield, then shuffle.

Our Take: A classic reprint that perfectly fits the theme! Mirkwood wouldn't be complete without its Wood Elves, and having this Commander staple reprinted with brand new flavor and art is a fantastic touch.
