Importing from Moxfield & AI Semantic Upgrades: A How-To Guide

2026-07-06 | 3 min read

Managing a physical Magic: The Gathering collection and deciding how to upgrade your favorite decks can be a daunting task. That is why we are excited to roll out two massive features designed to simplify your workflow: Moxfield Collection Import and AI-Driven Semantic Upgrades.

In this guide, we will walk you through how to export your inventory from Moxfield, import it into takescake, and leverage our advanced AI recommendation engine to discover card upgrades you do not already own.

Part 1: Moxfield Collection Import

Whether you have a few commander decks or a binder of thousands of cards, you can now bring them into takescake in seconds. We support importing through both copy-pasted text lists and direct .csv file uploads.

How to Export from Moxfield

  1. Log into your Moxfield account.
  2. Navigate to your Collection or select the Deck you want to import.
  3. Click the Export button in Moxfield's control panel.
  4. Select Export to CSV to download a spreadsheet, or click Copy to Clipboard to grab a text representation.

How to Import into takescake

  1. Navigate to the Collection Manager page.
  2. Click on the Import Moxfield tab.
  3. Either:
    • Drag and drop your downloaded .csv file into the upload zone.
    • Paste the copied text list directly into the text area.
  4. Click Match Cards.
"Count","Name","Edition","Condition","Language","Foil","Collector Number"
1,"Arcane Signet","ELD","Near Mint","English","foil","331"
1,"Sol Ring","PF19","Near Mint","English","foil","1"

Our backend matching engine matches cards by prioritizing Set + Collector Number for exact printing resolution, then falls back to Exact Name Match, and finally utilizes a Levenshtein Distance Fuzzy Match for minor typos or missing set codes. If a line is ambiguous, the tool presents you with the top three closest options so you can manually select the correct card before importing.

Once reviewed, you can choose to Merge these cards into your existing takescake collection or Overwrite it.

Part 2: AI Upgrades & Semantic Recommendations

Once your collection is loaded, you can now discover Interesting Upgrades using our local semantic and synergy card embeddings.

Navigate to the AI Upgrades & Recommendations tab in the collection page. You will see a dropdown loaded with all the cards you own.

Dual-Engine Recommendation

When you select a card as a seed (e.g. your Commander, Atraxa, or a key engine like Blood Artist) and click Find Recommendations, our engine calculates two separate similarities:

  1. ✨ Synergy Upgrades: Utilizing our hybrid synergy search engine, this queries for cards that are mechanically cooperative with your seed. For example, selecting a sacrifice outlet like Viscera Seer will recommend death payoffs like Blood Artist and token creators like Sengir Autocrat.
  2. 🧬 Semantic Twins: By loading precomputed Gemma-embeddings of card oracle texts, we calculate the cosine similarity between the seed card and the rest of the database. This finds cards with extremely similar mechanical rules—perfect for finding backup copies of key effects (like finding Farseek when seeding Three Visits).

All recommendations are cross-referenced with your local collection. If you already own a card, it receives a green Owned badge. If you do not own it, it receives a purple Upgrade badge, a real-time TCGplayer market price, an affiliate buy button, and a quick-log button to easily add it to your collection once you acquire it.

Strategic AI Brew Coach

In addition to visual lists, the recommendations layer a glassmorphic AI Brew Coach strategic advice panel. If Ollama is running locally with the gemma3:4b or gemma4:e2b chat models, the recommender runs a custom Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) query.

It sends the seed card's stats and rules text, analyzes its core archetypes, and synthesizes a strategic explanation of why these card recommendations are interesting upgrades, along with combo tips.

Future Roadmap

We are looking to expand this system to support:

  • Paste-and-match decklists directly in the Buy-the-Delta Upgrade Planner.
  • Exporting your takescake collection back out to Moxfield format.
  • Multi-card theme analysis to suggest cards matching your overall collection archetypes.

Try importing your collection today and see what upgrades the AI Coach suggests!
